Esstac at Mission Gear Pro.
Choosing a magazine pouch starts with the magazine, followed by height, layout and mounting. Esstac KYWI Pouches combine a textile body with a shaped Kydex insert. Mission Gear Pro is an authorised Esstac dealer. Our range includes compact Single models, Double and Triple versions, and combined rifle and pistol pouches. This guide explains the differences to help you choose a suitable configuration. Colours and current availability are listed on each product page.
How the KYWI system works
KYWI stands for Kydex Wedge Insert. The shaped internal insert retains a compatible magazine. The open models do this without an additional flap or shock cord. The insert also helps the pouch keep its shape when empty, unlike an all-elastic pocket that collapses flat.
The pouch and insert need to work together: a calibre label alone does not establish magazine compatibility. Start with the specific magazine, then choose the appropriate KYWI version.
5.56 KYWI: choose height and capacity separately
Single, Double or Triple
The Single 5.56 Midlength KYWI Pouch holds one STANAG/AR-15 magazine. The Double 5.56 Midlength KYWI Pouch and Triple 5.56 Midlength KYWI Pouch hold two or three magazines side by side. Increasing capacity mainly increases the width required. The Triple suits three positions in one unit, while individual pouches give you more freedom to distribute them across the available space.
Shorty or Midlength
Shorty leaves more of the magazine exposed; Midlength covers it further up. Our Single 5.56 Shorty KYWI Pouch and Double 5.56 Shorty KYWI Pouch offer the shorter format. Consider how much magazine you want accessible above the pouch and how it fits beside other equipment. Both heights are intended for the specified magazine types; AK magazines do not fit these 5.56 STANAG pouches.
Naked or Webbing
Naked means a smooth front. Webbing adds front PALS rows for extra equipment. This choice affects the front, not the rear mounting interface. Naked keeps the surface simple when nothing needs attaching there. Choose Webbing when you have a use for that extra mounting space.
Pistol KYWI: match the insert
The Single Pistol KYWI Pouch provides one magazine position. The Double Pistol GAP KYWI Pouch places two compartments side by side with extra spacing. The Lidded Double Pistol GAP KYWI Pouch adds covers, so the full magazine length must also fit beneath the lid. Esstac describes it for Glock 19/17-sized magazines, with Glock 19X 19-round magazines around the upper length limit.
In our shop, select Glock for Glock magazines or 2011 for other compatible double-stack pistol magazines. “2011” identifies the insert type. For the standard models, Glock 19 magazine length is roughly the minimum; Glock 26 and similarly short magazines are unsuitable. Slimline magazines such as P365, Glock 43X and M&P Shield require different versions.
GAP and mounting: the extra spacing on the Double Pistol GAP does not align with a standard MOLLE/PALS grid. Esstac intends it for belt mounting and recommends suitable belt loops. Match the attachment to the specific belt.
Individual modules, Side by Side or Stacked?
Separate Single pouches can be positioned individually. A combined pouch groups several compartments into one unit. The 2x Pistol + 1x 5.56 Shorty Side By Side KYWI Pouch places one rifle and two pistol compartments next to each other. The 1+2 Stacked 5.56 KYWI Pouch puts two pistol compartments in front of the rifle compartment, saving width while adding depth.

Our Stacked listing offers Shorty, Midlength and Tall. Select the height and pistol insert separately. Allow for neighbouring pouches, seated use and the total space available. The Side by Side version is intended for STANAG and compatible double-stack pistol magazines; single-stack 1911 and AK magazines do not fit.
Angled and Magnet: additional features
The Single 40° Angled Pistol KYWI Pouch and Double 40° Angled Pistol KYWI Pouch position one or two pistol magazines at 40° on a belt. Pay attention to the insert and Handedness: Right Handed is the model for a right-handed user, worn on the left; Left Handed is worn on the right by a left-handed user. Both angle towards the rear. Our listed Angled models are the non-magnetic versions.

The separate Magnet Single Pistol KYWI Pouch adds an external magnet for temporarily holding suitable magnetically attracted items. It does not increase retention of the magazine inside the pouch. The Angled pouches also offer a 1911 option with a dedicated body and insert for single-stack 1911 magazines; it is different from 2011.
7.62, AK and MP5/B&T: check the magazine pattern
The 7.62 Single KYWI Midlength is intended for compatible double-stack magazines in patterns such as M1A, FAL and SR25. Our listing offers 20rnd or 25rnd inserts. For the 7.62 AK Single KYWI Midlength, Esstac explains that the underlying pouch is the same as its regular 7.62 model. An AK magazine's curve and locking lug affect fit, so a perfect fit for every model is not guaranteed.
For compatible MP5 and B&T 9 mm magazines, we carry the MP5/B&T Double GAP Shorty KYWI Pouch and MP5 B&T Triple GAP Shorty KYWI Pouch. Esstac prefers Midlength over Shorty for 30-round magazines. The GAP layout also extends slightly into neighbouring PALS channels; the manufacturer recommends One-Wrap on Ronin/Micro PALS belts.
One specialist pouch completes the range: the Cobra Cuff Single KYWI Pouch is intended for one set of COBRA CUFFS®. The restraints are sold separately; this is not a universal pouch for arbitrary handcuff models.
How to mount Esstac KYWI pouches: MALICE Clips and belt attachments
For a KYWI pouch with a compatible MOLLE/PALS mounting layout, add Tactical Tailor Fight Light MALICE Clips (2-Pack). Choose Short for Shorty and Midlength KYWI pouches or Long for Tall KYWI pouches. Each pack contains two clips of the selected length; the number of clips needed depends on the pouch.
The clips weave through the rear of the pouch and the mounting platform. On the 5.56 Midlength models covered here, use only the upper three of the four rear webbing rows, as specified by Esstac. A Webbing front provides extra attachment space on the face of the pouch; it does not include or replace the rear mounting hardware.
For belt mounting, check the specific pouch and belt interface before choosing clips, belt loops or One-Wrap. The Double Pistol GAP has wider compartment spacing that does not align with a standard MOLLE/PALS grid; Esstac recommends belt loops for this model.
